Ghana defeated 10-man Tunisia 2-1 after extra time at Stade de Franceville Sunday to reach the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations semi-finals.

John Mensah opened the scoring on 10 minutes, Sabeur Khalifa equalised just before half-time and Andre Ayew punished a blunder by goalkeeper Aymen Mathlouthi to snatch the winner before Aymen Abdennour was red carded.

Running back Curtis Martin headlined a six-member Class of 2012 that will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, it was announced Saturday.

Martin is joined by defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy, defensive end Chris Doleman, left tackle Willie Roaf, center Dermontti Dawson, and cornerback Jack Butler.

Martin retired after the 2005 season and was the NFL’s fourth-leading rusher with 14,101 yards when he walked away from the game. A first or second-team All-Pro three times during his career with the New England Patriots and New York Jets, Martin scored 90 rushing touchdowns and rushed for 100 or more yards in 56 games. Martin and Hall of Famer Barry Sanders are the only running backs in league history to start their careers with 10 consecutive seasons with at least 1,000 yards rushing.

Kennedy registered 58 sacks and scored one touchdown on a fumble recovery in his 11-season career with the Seattle Seahawks. The No. 3 overall pick in the 1990 NFL Draft, Kennedy had a streak of 116 games played, earned selection to eight Pro Bowls (1992 to 97, 1999, 2000) and missed just nine games out of a possible 176 in his career.

Doleman was the 1992 NFC Defensive Player of the Year after registering 14.5 sacks and 64 tackles. He also returned an interception for a touchdown, forced six fumbles, recovered another three, and collected a safety. An eight-time Pro Bowl pick and three-time first-team All-Pro, Doleman is tied for third in NFL history with eight seasons of 10 or more sacks.

Originally a right tackle as a rookie with the New Orleans Saints, Roaf moved to left tackle in 1994 and earned selection to 11 Pro Bowls during his career with the Saints and Kansas City Chiefs. During his second NFL season, Roaf was a first-team All-Pro. Roaf was a first-team All-Pro seven times. He was named to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1990s.

Dawson played his entire 13-year career with the Steelers after the team took him in the second round of the 1998 NFL Draft. He played in 170 consecutive games before a hamstring injury ended that run during the 1999 season. He was selected as the NFL Alumni’s offensive lineman of the year in 1996. Dawson was a first-team All-Pro selection from 1993 to 1998 and played in seven straight Pro Bowls from 1993 to 1999. During Dawson’s career, the Steelers won five AFC Central titles and one AFC championship.

Butler was an undrafted free agent who played in 103 games over nine seasons with the Steelers. Although his career was cut short due to a leg injury in 1959, Butler retired with the second-most interceptions in NFL history. He collected 52 interceptions, which he returned for 827 yards and also scored four touchdowns on those returns. Butler also caught four touchdown passes and scored one on a fumble return.

New England tight end Rob Gronkowski walked without a limp as the Patriots gathered for photographs on Saturday.

Gronkowski, recovering from a high left ankle sprain and listed as questionable for Super Bowl XLVI, and his teammates posed for official team Super Bowl photos and pictures with family members at Lucas Oil Stadium the day before the championship game against the New York Giants.

“I think he’s doing better,” coach Bill Belichick said before the team went on the field to begin the session. “I think he’s doing a little better each day. We’ll just have to see where things (are) and get through tomorrow.”

From just past noon until 1:30 p.m., Patriots players, coaches and staff mingled with family and posed for picture after picture as the clock ticked down to Sunday’s game. Julian Edelman, who plays wide receiver and defensive back, posed with both groups.

“It really is (good to see the players enjoy the day),” Belichick said. “These guys have worked hard, they’ve earned this trip. We know we’re here for a job but it’s also a fun thing to be part of this game so it’s fun to be seeing them enjoying it. This is what we all work for. To be here. You want to be here, you want to enjoy it, there’s a job to do but you want to be able to enjoy the trip.”

The Patriots will spend Saturday night at their team hotel on the campus of IUPUI on the edge of downtown Indianapolis. Belichick said there were no stragglers that missed the team’s Friday night curfew.

After the stadium session, the team returned to its hotel. The Patriots will have a team meeting in-between lunch and dinner. There will be a curfew Saturday night as well. The time was undisclosed.

A week after Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers decried the lack of effort by his Pro Bowl teammates, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell called for the league’s all-star game to be played at a higher level.

“We’re either going to have to improve the quality of what we’re doing in the Pro Bowl or consider other changes or even consider eliminating the game if that’s the kind of quality game we’re going to provide,” Goodell said Sunday on ESPN Radio’s “Mike and Mike in the Morning,” according to ESPN.com.

After acknowledging that “fans were actively booing in stands,” Goodell implied that the game has to be less about rest and relaxation for the players and more about giving fans what they want. According to the website, Goodell said he has communicated his concerns to NFL Players Association DeMaurice Smith.

“I know players love to be in Hawaii but we have to start with the quality of what we’re doing,” Goodell said. “If the fans are responding negatively to what we’re doing, we better listen. And that was my message.”

Rodgers, who was recently named the league’s MVP, registered his own negative review of the AFC’s 59-41 victory shortly after it was played.

“I’ll be honest with you, I was a little disappointed,” Rodgers told ESPN Milwaukee. “I felt like some of the guys on the NFC side embarrassed themselves. There should be some pride involved in a game like that, and I was just surprised by some of the efforts by some of the guys.”

Major League Baseball has also dealt with an all-star game that has at times been played with low levels of intensity. After the 2002 edition ended in a tie, it was decided that home-field advantage in the World Series would be given to the league that won the game.

With hours to go before Sunday’s Super Bowl, New York Giants defensive end Chris Canty predicted success for his team one more time, tweeting his guess at the final score: “Giants 28, New England 17.”

Canty had previously promised that the Giants will be throwing a victory parade next week, making headlines but drawing little in the way of ire from Patriots players.

“When a guy says (what Canty said), you don’t really take offense to it because what else is he supposed to think?” Patriots cornerback Devin McCourty told the Newark Star-Ledger Thursday in response to Canty’s parade comments. “He’s not supposed to think he’s going to walk off the field a loser in the Super Bowl.”

Sunday’s tweet showed that Canty has a very specific idea of exactly how the Giants will walk off the field.

Canty tweeted the line in response to the following tweet from @JasonRomano, whose LinkedIn bio lists him as an ESPN producer: “Send me your Super Bowl predictions that stink — Closest to the score gets a copy of @ToddGongwer’s new book “Lead for God’s Sake’”.

The NFL — which allowed players to send tweets during last Sunday’s Pro Bowl game — prohibits players from tweeting 90 minutes before regular-season games. Canty’s tweet was sent at 12:11 p.m. ET, three hours and 18 minutes before Sunday’s scheduled kickoff of 3:29 p.m. ET.
