KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Poked, prodded and asked about his starting quarterback just about every way possible, Chiefs coach Todd Haley had the same answer every time: Tyler Palko is the guy.

That doesn’t mean Kyle Orton won’t take the majority of the snaps Sunday at Chicago.

Haley said before practice Wednesday that Palko would receive about 60 percent of the repetitions with the first-team offense this week. Orton, who was claimed off waivers from the Denver Broncos one week ago, will take the remaining 40 percent as he tries to learn the playbook and his new teammates.

“Tyler’s our starter. We’re getting Kyle ready to play,” Haley said. “He’s not like a guy who’s been here a couple of years. It’s a different situation. So we’re getting him ready to play.”

Orton didn’t arrive in Kansas City until Friday, two days after he was claimed, which kept him from having a chance to play last Sunday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Orton was inactive for the game, and Palko threw three interceptions and fumbled a snap in a disheartening 13-9 loss.

Palko took the first set of repetitions in quarterback drills during the few minutes of practice that the media was allowed to observe Wednesday. Orton took the second series.

“It’s not a perfect world. It’s not going to be perfect,” Orton said afterward. “You just make do the best you can, prepare yourself the best you can. That’s something that I’ve always prided myself on, being the best prepared on the field every week.”

Orton said that, contrary to some rumors, he wasn’t hoping to land in Chicago, which also was looking for a quarterback after losing Jay Cutler to a thumb injury, possibly for the season. The Bears put in a claim on Orton, but the Chiefs got him because they had the priority by virtue of their worse win-loss record.

“That’s out of the players hands. I know a lot was made of it,” said Orton, who also denied any notion that he contemplated not reporting to Kansas City. “I didn’t say anything about that. I think people try to connect the dots and say, you know, he would love to go there.”

A report by the Broward Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday night that Miami Dolphins receiver Brandon Marshall was briefly handcuffed and detained while deputies investigated a misunderstanding about a $142 cab fare.

Marshall eventually paid the fare and was released without being charged.

The incident, first reported by the South Florida Times, occurred early Nov. 14, barely 12 hours after a Dolphins’ home victory over Washington. When a taxi driver summoned deputies shortly before 7 a.m., Marshall was handcuffed and placed in the back of a patrol car while deputies questioned those involved.

Marshall said he had wanted to go home, but his driver had a thick accent and they had difficulty understanding each other, according to deputies.

The Dolphins had no comment when reached by NFL Network on Wednesday evening.

The Jacksonville Jaguars continue to make changes to its coaching staff after firing coach Jack Del Rio on Tuesday.

The Jaguars fired wide receivers coach Johnny Cox on Tuesday. The team also shifted quarterbacks coach Mike Sheppard to wide receivers coach and offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter to quarterbacks coach.

The team also waived starting receiver Jason Hill, taking a step toward preparing for next year.

Hill had a disappointing season, catching 25 passes for 367 yards and three touchdowns, and dropped several balls. Since the Jaguars (3-8) plan to revamp their receiving corps in the offseason, waiving Hill forces Jarett Dillard, Chastin West, Cecil Shorts and Brian Robiskie onto the field more for evaluation.

The team also signed running back DuJuan Harris to the active roster from the practice squad, a move that could mean less playing time for Deji Karim.

Jacksonville also signed free agent cornerback Morgan Trent and placed safety Courtney Greene on injured reserve with a hamstring injury. The Jaguars have a league-high 18 players on injured reserve.

Jacksonville hosts San Diego on Monday night.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — New York Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson and wide receiver Jeremy Kerley were full participants at practice for the first time since injuring their knees more than two weeks ago.

Both Tomlinson and Kerley sprained the medial collateral ligament in their left knees against New England on Nov. 13 and had not been able to practice until the session Wednesday. Coach Rex Ryan says both players “looked fresh and ready to roll” for the team’s game at Washington on Sunday.

Defensive lineman Mike DeVito was the only player who did not practice after spraining the MCL in his left knee against Buffalo last Sunday. DeVito missed two games earlier this season with the same injury to his right knee. Ryan doesn’t expect DeVito to play against the Redskins.

Detroit Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh‘s appeal hearing for his two-game suspension will take place Thursday at 3 p.m. Eastern, according to a league source.

Art Shell, jointly appointed and compensated by the league and NFL Players Association, will be the appeals officer.

Suh learned Tuesday of his suspension for stomping Green Packers offensive lineman Evan Dietrich-Smith in the Lions’ Thanksgiving Day loss. He promptly appealed the suspension, which has kept him from practicing with the Lions and barred him from team facilities.

If Suh loses his appeal, he would miss the Lions’ game Sunday against the New Orleans Saints and a Dec. 11 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings.
